FAQs: Do I need a plumber for this?

How do I know if I need a plumber, or if it’s a quick DIY fix?

If it’s a simple visible issue (like a loose tap handle or a trap you can access) it may be DIY. But if there is any leaking into floors/walls, repeated loss of pressure, sewage smells/back-up, or you can’t isolate the water safely, it’s best to call a plumber.

- Call us for advice / booking: 01285 851 268
- If you’re unsure, a quick call can prevent costly damage.

When should I call a plumber urgently?

Call urgently if there is active leaking, flooding, water near electrics, sewage backing up, or you have no water supply. If you ever feel it’s unsafe, prioritise safety first (turn off water and electrics if safe) and seek immediate help.

- If there’s significant flooding or risk to electrics, consider calling your water supplier or an emergency service as appropriate.
- If we’re unavailable, we can still advise on next steps and book the earliest possible visit.

What should I do first if I have a leak?

If safe, turn off the water at the stopcock (or an isolation valve), open cold taps to relieve pressure, and contain water with towels/buckets. If water is near sockets, lights, or the consumer unit, switch off power at the mains only if it is safe to do so.

- Stopcock is often under the kitchen sink, in a hallway cupboard, or near the meter.
- A photo/video of the leak helps us diagnose faster.

My toilet won’t stop running - do I need a plumber?

A continuously running toilet is often caused by a worn fill valve, flush valve, or float adjustment. If you can isolate the toilet supply and it stops, it can usually wait for a scheduled repair. If it’s overflowing or you can’t isolate it, call us.

Water pressure has dropped - do I need a plumber?

Low pressure can be caused by a partially closed stopcock, a leak, a faulty pressure-reducing valve, limescale/blocked pipework, or a supply issue. If it’s sudden and only affects one outlet, it may be local to that tap/shower. If it affects the whole property, it’s worth a plumber visit.

- Quick check: are any isolation valves partially closed?
- If you’re on a shared supply, ask neighbours if they’re affected.

My taps are dripping - is it worth calling a plumber?

Yes if it’s persistent, getting worse, or you’re noticing damp under the sink. Drips are commonly caused by worn cartridges/valves, and fixing them early prevents damage and waste. If the tap is a premium brand, we can also help identify the right parts.

I can smell drains - is that a plumbing issue?

Often, yes. Smells can come from a dry trap (rarely used sink/shower), a partial blockage, venting issues, or a failed seal. If running water doesn’t clear it, or it keeps returning, we can investigate and fix the cause.

Do you cover Cirencester and the wider Cotswolds?

Yes. We’re based in Cirencester and cover the wider Cotswolds area. Tell us your village/town and we’ll confirm availability and scheduling.

- Typical areas: Cirencester (GL7) and surrounding Cotswolds locations such as Swindon, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stow on the Wold, Burford.
